Outsourcing is growing in leaps and bounds these days, and not just outsourcing but outsourcing to the Philippines. That means good news for me, a Filipino online freelancer.

I consider the proliferation of outsourcing a blessing. Not only does it help the average Filipino earn a living, it helps the entire economy of our country. I am also very thankful that people from all over the world are recognizing the traits of Filipinos that make them very good workers.

I decided to become a freelancer around two years ago and have been the website manager of EasyOutsource for a year now. I have never regretted my decision to work from home ever since. What I did notice, though, is that compared to two years ago, freelancer rates are a lot lower now.

When I started freelancing, the lowest rate a freelancer from my country charges is $2/hr. The rate then varies depending on the type of work and the amount of experience a freelancer has. Nowadays, I can see freelancers charging lower than $1/hr. What brought about this change?

In my opinion, both freelancers and employers are to blame for this decline in rates – employers, for offering to pay low rates and freelancers, for accepting and agreeing to work for these rates. I cannot speak for employers, but I can speak for freelancers.

Coming from a country of more than 94M people, which produces 380T college graduates a year, you can imagine the stiff competition in the work force. While some graduates successfully enter into 9-5 jobs, a vast majority is left unemployed. Combine this with the popularity of the world wide web, with many households equipped with PCs and an internet connection, your result is the average Filipino online freelancer.

More and more people are resorting to working online, thus the number of competition is growing each day. As more people compete for a job, rates will naturally be leveraged for one to rise over their competition. This is the easiest factor to adjust, never mind that the more important ones like skills and experience, are more essential in online work.

This plays on the fact that the average employer is trying to save money, precisely why they resorted to outsourcing as opposed to hiring a local. In this scenario, no one can be blamed. It is the basic law of supply and demand.

Some people are saying that employers are exploiting Filipinos by giving them unreasonably low compensation. The operative word here is: reasonable. Moral obligation dictates that we do things within reason. That the Philippines is a third world country and the cost of living is a lot lower than that of more developed countries is a fact. Therefore, it is reasonable to pay a Filipino a lower rate for the same amount of work than say, an American. That is reasonable, and not exploitation.

When you start to do things that are out of reason, like paying a Filipino freelancer a very low rate because you were told it was ok and accepting that as gospel truth without investigating the matter yourself, then the problem begins.

So how do you know which rates are reasonable? It is not enough to know the country’s minimum wage and adding a little to that to determine a freelancer’s rate. You have to take a lot of other factors into consideration.

First, you’d have to know for which types of work is the minimum wage given. Second, you’d have to consider the fact that freelancers incur overhead expenses that an office worker does not – like electricity for the usage of their PC to do online work, the monthly cost of an internet connection, and training that they may have to pay for themselves.

You’d have to figure all of these in determining the reasonable rate to give a freelancer. Stay within reason and the success rate of your working relationship with your Filipino worker is likely to go up. There’s no denying the fact that our country is a goldmine of working online professionals. It is also widely known that a lot of Filipinos are intelligent, hardworking, and loyal. The quality of the work we render is comparable, and sometimes better than freelancers from other countries that charge higher rates. All these, and more, make me very proud to be Filipino.

I heard some exciting news the other day that would be lots of fun to share with you guys. A good friend of mine who is also an Internet marketer,  Sally Neill,  recently won a contest that is going to fetch her a completely new $2,000 blog redo ready to roll! Wow!

To be honest with you I do not even know what goes into a $2,000 blog other than the fact that Sally will get to have whatever design she wants placed there. Sally is a member of Alex Jeffrey’s List Building coaching course and this was a contest that Alex ran for all his students who wanted to participate.

The winner would be the person who generated the most blog comments within 4 weeks time.

I remember Sally being over the top excited initially and then lapsing into a small negative “I’ll never win” feeling. But, it didn’t last for long and Sally continued to pursue it…probably never expecting it to happen, yet wanting to play the game the best she knew how.

Well, to Sally’s surprise, it paid off. She was announced as the winner this week  and she will soon be the owner of a shiny new “$2,000″ blog redo. I can’t wait to see it!

I see some very important lessons for all of us here not the least of which is how important our network of friends, associates and JV partners is to our business online and the other thing I want to mention is how brilliant Alex Jeffreys was to use the “contest” strategy to help train his students with their list building tactics.

By using a contest, Alex got a lot of people involved….taking action. And, that’s where it all happens folks…in those action steps.

Here’s what Sally had to say about Alex’s contest: Doing just enough is never enough, you can always do more. Now Alex said just by entering the competition we will all become winners because:

1. We are using methods to generate traffic that will benefit us for years to come.

On another blog note: please be sure and check the expiration dates on any cards you may be using to pay for hosting and domain names. Another dear friend lost a few years of blog history and their blog domain name because their credit card expired.

Someone scooped up her domain name within an hour of it being available! Don’t take anything for granted…go check your expiration dates for both your cards and your hosting and domain names.

There may be someone waiting in the weeds for your blog domain name to appear as available and it could be gone within minutes. Let’s learn from the lessons of others.

The reason I am behind is that I have been actively searching, interviewing and placing candidates of my own. In fact, in my next post I am going to outline some of the experiences I have had….believe me, you don’t want to miss that one!

Module 3 starts with “Where to find the best virtual staff to suit your business,” to screening and hiring virtual staff; hiring for technical and customer service/admin roles; hiring for sales, marketing, accounts and finance roles; what virtual staff you should hire first; what you can expect if your staff is not right; and finally guidelines for managing virtual staff.

This is probably the most important module to get right. If you get this right, you’re off and running….get it wrong…and you go back to “start.”

What Tyrone does in the first part of this module is actually outline for you through video how to use Online Jobs.  You learn why it is important to find someone who has at least 1-3 years experience, why to avoid college graduates who might not know how to operate in the business world yet and make sure they have a relevant university degree.

In my own experience, I have found the majority to have IT degrees or Computer Science degrees…that’s what you are after.

Tyrone also offers another solution for those that want the process done for them. He uses C.S.V.A.S….Contact Services Virtual Solutions for finding some virtual staff and speaks highly of the owner Rochelle Martinez. If you are interested in such service, contact her at:

I have not used her for many reasons…I want the first hand experience myself.  It may be something I would consider in the future, but not at this point.

It’s important to know which virtual staff to hire first and in Module 3 tutorial 7 Tyrone explains from his own personal experience and from the experience of others why he recommends hiring a Virtual Assistant first to take care of all the administrative tasks such as customer service, checking email and handling data entry tasks.

These are the most repetitive tasks and outsourcing these will free up your time and energy to use in the more productive and creative areas of your business.

You, as the entrepreneur cannot be tied up with these menial tasks. They will steal your energy and time.

On the other hand, if your business has different requirements such as hiring a programmer to manage your websites or hiring someone to do the techie side of things then this is the first hire you should place. You really need to know your own business and what the needs of your business are.

Tyrone shares his personal experiences with you in regards to his own hiring of a VA.  He stresses how  important it is to hire one person at a time so that you can train them properly. You need to be aware of certain things like:

• how they work
• how they are able to respond to all the work that you need
• how long it takes for them to complete their work
• and will they be able to learn things quickly

The most important thing to understand is that you must spend some time training them. Invest your time and energy into getting your staff trained in the way you want things done. It may cost you in the beginning, but the rewards on the back end are priceless.

The process of placing your first VA can  take a month or more. You  must search, interview, test and hire. The first month should always be designated as a trial month. Tyrone usually starts them out at $250 US and reviews them after a month. This leave room to give a raise to the right person.

Start them too high and you are hard pressed to raise them or give them bonuses. But, please don’t try and cheat them either.

One thing I’ve learned about this outsourcing business and that is that every situation is different but there are a few things that need to be adhered to by all your outsourced workers. The first thing Tyrone stresses is that you must have your Project Management System in place so that your newly hired Independent contractors have a place to be accountable for their work.

This must be done on a daily basis. Here is what Tyrone has to say about this subject:

“The first thing I want to talk about is how to keep them accountable and also make sure that they are completing the work on time. With the project management system Projects2.us, you have the capability to allow them to send in their Daily Accountability sheet.

So as long as you’ve set your Virtual Staff up in the system, and also made sure that they’ve been assigned for the Daily Accountability and training modules, they should be able to review all that and know how to do it.

Obviously, if they haven’t been able to submit anything, you might want to follow up with them for the first time and make sure that they are submitting. But, the most important thing is that they have to be submitting the Daily Accountability daily.

If they are not doing that, obviously that’s the first sign that they’re not completing the work and also not committed to work within your own business.

That’s just a requirement that I make sure that I tell them. If they don’t complete that, then unfortunately, I have to fire them and terminate the relationship and that’s as simple as that. Because if they are disciplined and they follow your rules, then I’ll know that this type of person that’s working for my business is going to be able to complete all the work on time.”

As you can see, Tyrone doesn’t mess around. But, you must be firm and set the rules from the get go. It allows you to see right off who is going to follow direction and who isn’t. Don’t waste any time. Those that cannot follow these simple directions are most likely never going to be an asset to your business. Move on.

If you have not already hired a full staff of contractors that can accomplish your task for you then you must entertain the idea of outsourcing the project to a project based/bidding site.

Although there are a few that deserve mention, there is one that is preferred by Filipinos…this site is oDesk. You can find good Filipino workers there that will work on your project for about the same rate as you would pay your permanent Independent contractor.

A friend of yours may have used oDesk to get their business scaled up, but it’s your first time using it and you want to get in gear. You know that oDesk can offer web developers, software designers and even content creators for your business. How do you get the most from your oDesk order?

Here’s some tips:

1. List your needs, precisely: oDesk provides coders who can create your website in at least 30 languages. They have designers who can create your logo. There are accounting personnel who are proficient in the latest software. If your company has an international presence, oDesk can provide translations for your site. What’s key, however, is that you decide exactly what you need before you start advertising for it.
2. Set your budget: At oDesk, you can decide whether your contractors will work by the hour or be paid a fixed price per project. 5. Provide even more information: Now that you’ve selected your providers or team members, you want to give them in-depth details of what you hope to accomplish. Try to give your contractors more of a feel for what you’re asking. The more information your team has, the better they can suit your needs.
6. Use the reports and work diary to monitor progress: Once they have all the information they need and have gotten to work, you can monitor their progress using the work diary and reports section. Often, people have no idea of the labor that goes into a specific project and are surprised at the bill. You can keep track of the time that your contractors are spending on your project to get a better concept of what the bill is going to be.
7. Take a look at the in-progress work: This is where you can see what your people are actually doing for you. You can get an idea of where they are in the project, and also guide them in the direction that you want them to go to. If you see that there is something going wrong, you can correct the course when the error is small.
8. Answer questions as quickly as possible: If your team members have questions about what they need to be doing, you want to answer them as quickly as possible so you can get the job completed. No question is silly or unreasonable. When you hire someone to work for you, that person needs to have guidelines and boundaries to work within.
9. Communicate with your team manager: There is a possibility that your service provider is a company in another country. The team leader should be the one who is most proficient in the language that you speak. That leader can properly convey your message to the others.
10. Give detailed, honest feedback: The feedback process is designed to help both parties grow. If you are pleased with the work that your service provider did, tell them in writing. If you have similar projects that are in the works, you can request them again.If you are not comfortable with hiring them again, tell them in a private venue.This provides closure to the job on both accounts and help everyone’s next job turn out better.

First I’d like to say that I am really enjoying this class. It is well organized with videos to explain everything that is taught. In fact, Tyrone supplies us all with videos, pdf’s and mp3′s…so, no excuses for not learning.

There are 8 modules in this course starting with 1: A General Overview of Employing Virtual Staff and ending with Module 8: Setting Your Business In Automatic Mode.

The first area that Tyrone addresses is “Developing the Outsourcing Mindset.” Inside our first lesson, we learned about the 80/20 rule and what this rule has to do with us. Anyone who has read Tim Ferris’ book the “4 Hour Work Week” will be familiar with this rule.

Basically the 80/20 rule is that in your life, 80 percent of your outcomes come from 20 percent of your inputs. Or you can say that 20 percent of your activities produce 80 percent of your financial rewards.

According to Wikipedia: The 80/20 rule was named after the Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto. He observed that 80% of income in Italy was received by 20% of the Italian population. The assumption is that most of the results in any situation  are determined by a small number of causes.

In Tyrone’s case, these are the examples of the 20% activities that produce 80% percent of his income:

• Networking with others through Skype and email. this establishes relationships and eventually leads to doing business together in the form of partnerships or JV’s or gaining affiliates.
• Writing newsletters and sending them to customers…this continues to build that all important relationship.
• Creating video content to  provide value to readers. This also creates other business opportunities and markets the business brand.

So, this was our first real exercise, to write down what the 20% of activities are in our business that produce 80% of our income. The second question/part of the exercise was to list the remainder of the activities that don’t generate income but need to be completed. This helps to determine which activities need to be outsourced to staff to complete.

Another important idea that Tyrone pulled from Tim Ferris is the acronym called D-E-A-L.

• D is for definition: You need to define what you want out of this whole outsourcing course and also what you want to achieve within your own business. This idea is not new and any successful business starts with a vision. Imagine in your mind what it is that you are trying to achieve through this process.What is your dream?Are you like me, do you want to travel? Define it.

• E is for elimination: How you look at your day and split it up into the 80/20 principle. Apply that principle to eliminate the things that are not dollar productive and focus on things that will make money. This is where outsourcing comes in.You train your staff to do the activities that are not dollar productive such as all your admin duties that can be very time consuming. This frees you up to tend to those activities that are producing income.

• A for automation: Automating your business by having everything in place such as a project management system for your outsourcers to check into and the correct system to have in place to run and receive payments from customers so that your virtual staff can handle these things for you and make sure that it goes into the right account.

• L is for liberation: Now that one brings a smile to my face. Liberated! Free! Doesn’t just the idea of it excite you? Liberation is all about living your dream lifestyle, designing your whole life…free to live it has you see fit and not have to worry about anything dealing with your business because your virtual staff is managing the business for you. This will happen over time.

  This one is the long term strategy or goal. This is achieving your desired lifestyle.

World in your hands

Tyrone does an excellent job of supplying the education, the tools, advice and resources…but in the end, its up to us to take the action steps to make this all happen.

Module 1:  basically covers everything from why you should outsource, to how you should hire, how to pay, what work to give, and how to manage your virtual staff. There are 10 videos in this series.

Module 2: Developing the outsourcing mindset. Tyrone also introduces his Mass Outsource sytem in this module.

Next up in my series on Mass Outsource Mastermind is Module 3: Hiring Virtual Staff. In this module we’ll cover everything from finding the best virtual staff to suit your business, to how to screen them, what you can expect and the guidelines for managing them.

I really believe understanding and applying the 80/20 principle is the key to making all of this work. This is what brings clarity to us about our business and what our role should be.

At the end of the last post I promised to update my journey into Tyrone’s Mass Outsource Mastermind course. And, I do promise that I will give a detailed progress report in just a few days. Jeff Mill’s Outsourcing Secrets is geared toward educating you, not the outsourcer…as opposed to John Jonas’ ReplaceMyself.com which is a resource site dedicated to teaching your outsourcer. Each site does have tools to use for your outsourcer such as Jeff Mill’s 81 Word Press Video Tutorials that either you or your outsourcer/member of your team can log in and view. These 81 videos are broken down into 7 modules for easy navigation and viewing.

Jeff also puts out a newsletter filled with tips and suggestions for your outsourcing project as well as continually motivating you to take action. His is an ongoing coaching program in outsourcing. He also hosts a few seminars each year. His next seminar is called “The Boost Seminar” and will be held in St. Paul, Minnesota (Jeff’s home state) March 19, 20th, 21st of this year.  Remember, Jeff said there are two things that successful Internet marketers do:

• they all network by going to these Seminars (the absolutely best place to meet new JV partners as well as bringing people into your existing network.) Your network is your lifeblood and without it you will struggle to succeed.
• they all outsource some or all of their work

A few more things you’ll find in Jeff’s site include:

• A page full of videos from interviews he did on outsourcing and related subjects with other successful marketers. Some titles include: “Affiliate Management using Outsourced Talent” and “Jeff Mills presents the Train My Money Maker System and Blueprints.”
• A page of hiring documents such as a Work for Hire Agreement and Affiliate Manager Agreement.
• A full page of MP3′s to listen to and PDF’s to download and learn from.
• A forum to exchange ideas, ask questions, network with others who are interested in outsourcing. It’s not a heavily active forum…at least not yet, but Jeff does seem to monitor it daily and responds quickly.
• A complete resource page, showing you the tools and systems he uses with his virtual assistants.

Jeff also offers the option of purchasing his “Train My Money Maker System and Blueprints.” Included with this system are 8 Money Making Systems that are essentially a “business in a box” type thing that you give your outsourcer, tell them to watch the videos, read the manuals and implement what they learned. I can’t list them all but here is an example of one: “Affiliate Auto Blogs.” Your outsourcer would learn this system and implement it.

These 8 ready made systems will cost you $249….which I actually think is a very fair price to have something ready to go and start your outsourcing immediately. The perfect shortcut to those who want to outsource but don’t have their own manual or package/system they can hand to their outsourcer.

Replacemyself. com was created by John Jonas a year or two ago to address outsourcing….specifically to the Philippines. This site will be primarily used to train your outsourcer in all the Internet marketing tasks that will be required of him. Included in John’s site:

• MyProjectPlans …this is the area you  use to post your projects/assignments and your outsourcer checks in to complete them. This is the only place you should be sending your outsourcers to. Replacemyself.com is not for their eyes, only “My Project Plans” which is an area you  will have access to once you join Replacemyself.  Your outsourcer can see at a glance what needs to be accomplished. Of course you only have continued access to this as long as you are a paid member.
• Training Modules: You will automatically get the “Welcome” module and one other bonus module of your choice after joining. A new training module is released to you each month and you are allowed to juggle them into the order that you want to receive them. Additionally, you can puchase each module for $97…with each module you purchase you will also receive one month of membership in ReplaceMyself.com. Memberships cost $97 a month. These modules become available for your outsourcer to access in the My Project Plans area. To be honest, I’ve only watched a few of these videos but I’ve read in a few places that they are not the best quality training videos out there. That will have to be your decision
• A complete “Business in a Box” for those who can’t wait to get started but do not own any systems to give an outsourcer.
• Pre-found employees…if you neither want to or don’t have the time to sort out an outsourcer for yourself, there is a section of Pre-found employees that you can hire. Be aware that you will be tagged with quite a substantial “finders fee.” I find this area lacking in choices.
• Access to BestJobs.ph and Onlinejobs.ph…in my opinion this is probably the best benefit of joining Replacemyself.com. Remember I told you in my last post that Bestjobs.ph is no longer allowing anyone to sign up  for an account if they do not own a physical Philippine address. No one knows the reasoning for this, but inside John’s site he gives you access to Bestjobs.ph. You also get free access to Onlinejobs.ph which is his own Philippino hiring site that he set up. If you joined each one of these separately, you would have to pay for a membership…with Replacemyself.com it comes free….and, remember you cannot sign up for a new account at BestJobs.ph…this may be your only entrance into that resource.

As you can see, each one of these two membership sites has their place. One to educate, motivate and coach you to outsourcing success, and the other to educate, motivate, focus and coach your outsourcers.

The cost of Jeff Mill’s Outsourcing Secrets is $47 with a free month long trial. The cost of John Jonas’ ReplaceMyself.com is $97 a month. Most likely after the first month or two you will not have to continue as a member unless you want to send your outsourcer to these resources (such as “MyProjectPlans”)…obviously you would have to have a password and log in info to get them in.

In my own dealings and research into Jeff Mills and John Jonas they have come up with high marks in integrity and always over deliver content to their members. But, as always, you must do your own research and make up your own mind if these memberships are what your business needs at this point.

As for me, I will continue my own study and implementation of these tasks. I am presently searching for my own outsourcers from the Philippines and I will continue to post my progress.
